ATF Data from 2013 through 2018
This month’s Justice & Numbers column charts the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives five year totals of reported gun thefts (for calendar years 2013 – 2018).
Many guns are being stolen and entered into the ATF’s database. Consumers have social media fits about guns being sold or restricted at authorized retailers but these same loud social voices focus more on the corporate political stance rather than actual numbers of sales or thefts which have more direct bearing on crime and firearm casualties.
The political voices on BOTH sides of the gun ownership debate are LOUD and dedicated… that issue will not be solved or even addressed here. However, gun theft cuts past the disagreement onto the fact that an acting criminal has taken possession of the weapon.
Future Justice & Numbers entry will take a look at the comparative Gun Theft Arrest Statistics.
